Quality Food

Food rescue and food donations provide most of the food El Caldito needs to prepare and serve the average 250 meals eaten daily. Yet, we do have to purchase some food to supplement.

Quality Prepared Food

Our clients tell us we have “good food.” Every Sunday through Friday a team of volunteers prepare and serve a hot nutritious meal. Most is prepared from scratch. The meal consists of a green salad, a freshly-made soup, a fresh hot vegetable dish, a hot meat entree, fresh fruit, bread, a dessert, and a drink. Take-out seconds are offered. Every Saturday a team of volunteers prepare and hand-out a sack lunch. The lunch consists of two protein sandwiches (sometimes burritos, sometimes hot dogs), chips, cookies, and a drink. When available, El Caldito also hands out fresh fruit and fresh raw vegetables.

Donated Food

In 2016, $66,000-worth of food was donated to El Caldito by individuals, organizations, businesses and farmers. We accept donations Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 11:00 am and between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Thank you to all who deliver food to our kitchen door.

Rescued Food

In most cases, rescued food is edible food that would have been thrown into the garbage. In 2016, El Caldito rescued over 120,000 pounds of food from local bakeries, grocery stores, hospitals, restaurants, and farms. The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act passed in 1996 limits the liability to food donors and makes keeping food out of landfills a good choice. El Caldito has a volunteer two-person, food rescue team who drives a route everyday to local participating, food-related businesses and farms to pickup good food that cannot be sold to the public. In addition, Casa de Peregrinos, a food pantry, collaborates with us delivering some of the food they rescue through the Feeding America program to our door 2-3 days each week.

Purchased Food

El Caldito does need to supplement the rescued and donated food in order to serve complete balanced meals. We are a Partner Agency with New Mexico’s Roadrunner Food Bank which allows us to purchase food at reduced prices. Two to three times a month we submit our order online selecting from the foods and supplies being offered. Roadrunner delivers our order within a few days.
